North Okanagan Youth and Family Services Society is preparing to open a new Emergency Placement resource starting this month. Cedar House is the newest addition to the NOYFSS Specialized Homes Support Services. The new home will provide a safe, supportive short-term placement for children and youth who cannot live safely with their family and for whom no other care arrangement is readily available.

“It’s taken just over a year for us to make Cedar house a home and we are thrilled to be opening the doors for children and youth starting this month.” Says Dean Francks, Executive Director at NOYFSS. “Currently when a child or youth in this region is living in an unsafe home environment there isn’t always somewhere for them to turn. Often youth will jump from couch to couch living with friends and in many circumstances, they will end up experiencing homelessness. We recognize there is a need for this resource in the North Okanagan and we are excited to be able to offer it to the community.” Adds Francks.

Children and youth placed in Emergency Care benefit from an environment that supports their health, wellness, culture, and recovery, and that of their family. Emergency Care staff facilitate the assessment of the child/youth/family’s unique needs and circumstances, increasing the likelihood of reunification with family and ultimately decreasing the amount of youth and children coming into Care. This is the third resource that NOYFSS will be opening on their Specialized Homes Support Services Site, the other homes include Mara House which provides Short Term Stabilization and Sage House, which offers Respite Care.

NOYFSS Specialized Homes and Support Services are contracted through the Ministry of Children and Family Development and services to these resources are accessed through the Resource Team at MCFD.

Renovations made to Cedar House in preparation for opening were funded by a number of donors including:

  • Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD)
  • CN Rail Community Fund
  • Galbraith Family Fund
  • Foord Family Foundation
  • District of Coldstream Grant
  • Home Depot Foundation Orange Door Project Campaign
  • Stand Up for NOYFSS Fundraiser
  • Byram Family Foundation
  • Kal Rotary (Dream Auction)

“By creating a multi-resource site dedicated to on-going placement stability with consistent Specialized Homes Care providers NOYFSS can create safe landing places during a challenging time for a child or youth and their family.” Says Francks.

Whether a child or youth needs Emergency Placement, Short Term Stabilization or a family needs Respite Care, North Okanagan Youth and Family Services will be able to provide that care.
